Shems Friedlander is the author of nine books. His books have been translated into Turkish, Persian, Spanish and Dutch. He is a painter, photographer, designer, filmmaker and educator. Friedlander is Emeritus Professor at the American University in Cairo.
Among his books are ’Rumi and the Whirling Dervishes’, ’When You Hear Hoofbeats Think of a Zebra’ and ’Winter Harvest, a memoir’. He is currently working on a new book entitled ’The Forgotten Message of Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi’.
His paintings have been exhibited in Dubai, Cairo, and Istanbul. His documentary film Faisal, Legacy of a King premiered at the BAFTRA Theatre in London, and The Circles of Remembrance was featured in the Chagrin Film Festival in the U.S.
Friedlander has lectured extensively on Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi, the thirteenth century poet and mystic. He was selected as one of the 500 Most Influential Muslims in the World, in the field of Art and Culture, by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Center from 2012 through 2017.
